My life has been pretty interesting, full of varied experiences, that have broadened my views, outlooks, wisdom, and knowledge of life. I am skilled in so many different things, and this makes me happy!

About Me:

I am an autistic Gen-X’er, who grew up programming on an 8-bit computer, and wishing to be a military pilot and astronaut. I did not end up doing that, but I have kept up with those dreams in a redirected way. As an autistic person, my interests span a wide range of topics, and I can pick up skills fairly easily. This led me to experience more than the average person’s life experiences, where I picked up many views, skills, and knowledge.

I have been programming since I was in mid-80’s, starting on my Tandy TRS-80 Color Computer. I’ve designed and build RC airplanes and rocket cars. I learned some old programming languages at U.C. Davis, to include Pascal, Fortran 77, and Assembler on a 7-bit machine emulator. I’ve made many Raspberry Pi/3D Print projects, including web servers, media servers, retro gaming consoles, portable computers, and am still making more. I’m in the middle of making at least 3 more computer projects going on right now, for a wrist worn portable PC, a small mini-ITX desktop, and a Raspberry Pi laptop. And I have never stopped designing and building RC vehicles!

I have been an Intelligence Analyst, a Watercraft Engineer (Ship mechanic), and a Military Police Officer, in the Army. I learned about security, and threat analysis as an Intelligence Analyst. I learned about engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, and how to weld as an Army ship mechanic. I have traveled to different states and countries in the Army. I got to sit in on high level Iraqi Police and Army leadership meetings. The Army taught me how to lead, and how to manage, effectively. I have a Masters of Science in Homeland Security Studies, where not only did we learn about insurgencies and radicalization, but FEMA emergency management and critical infrastructure disaster response. I have hiked the mountains in Vermont in conditions from hot and waterless, to below 20 degrees in over a foot of snow. I have worked in government classified secure rooms, securing systems and networks there. I worked with a network of 80 Cisco switches and switch stacks, and re-architect it for improved reliability, throughput, and redundancy. On that network, I worked with an up to 1000 Linux server Sun Grid Engine compute cluster. All this has greatly molded my views on mitigation, preparation, planning, response, and security.

From all of this experience, I have learned:

Leadership.

Security.

Threat Analysis.

The ability to program in different languages, even if facing a new on I’ve never seen.

So many different programming languages.

Managing effectively and efficiently, by setting goals following the SMART principle of keeping them Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Security starts during the planning phase, whether it is a military operation, or the start of software project planning.

That I love lists.

That I love making technical documentation, and ensuring all processes and procedures are documented, and formatted nicely.

To be the advocate for those of us who are oft unthought of, or unknown, and our concerns for minority and disability awareness and belonging.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned in the past few years, is that my form of Autism really does terrible at technical code challenge interviews. My brain sees a blank screen, and sort of blanks out. However, throw me in front of some existing code, and task me to create new functionality, and I can make magic happen. I’ve created an API to pull user information from our company’s own secure secrets storage product, to compare with GitHub, and return build status for Jenkin CI builds, taking into consideration of PR/non-PR builds, success/fail, and sending both email and Teams messages with build status, project name, commit ID, and links to the GitHub Enterprise project branch page, the Jenkins console log page, all in languages I hadn’t really touched much, before. I’ve done the same for securing code for CVE vulnerabilities. Throw me at some code, and I will fix it, add to it, improve it, and make magic happen.

But, that’s enough about me. On with the projects. I work on more things, often all at once, than I have posted so far on this site. I actually killed off this site and restarted it, when I moved servers. So now we have a fresh start. What kinds of things will we see here?

Retro computing

Single-Board Computers (SBC)

3D Printing

RC aircraft, and possibly boats and ground vehicles

Nature projects

Hiking the mountains of Vermont

Gardening

Moss and lichen

Photography (Film and Digital)

Art

Lego

And the name-sake of this site, blacksmithing!

Enjoy!

Bunny IronWorks is about creative projects, nature, and science.
